Summary

As part of it’s long term strategy for building international cooperation, the BIC project is setting up an in-country Extended Working Group (EWG) in Brazil comprised of key members of the Brazilian research community engaged in research in all areas related to Trustworthy ICT and international cooperation.

The launch meeting of the Brazil EWG was held on 22nd October, 2013, at the Instituto de Tecnologia de Software (ITS) in São Paulo, Brazil. The terms of reference and the final agenda for the event can be found by clicking here –> BIC_EWG_22Oct2013_agenda.

Preliminary summary of outcomes of the event

There were numerous speakers from the trust and security research community from all over Brazil and discussions at the well attended included the following topics:

  • Future Internet security and privacy, including clean slate approaches and the requirements for security;
  • Security in embedded systems including mobile devices;
  • Socio-technical approaches for trust and security involving users with a concept called ‘Ceremonies’;
  • New approaches to deal with insider threats;
  • An overall summary of the trust and security research being carried out in Brazil;
  • Cryptography in Internet of Things;
  • Approaches for Critical Information Infrastructure Protection (CIIP);
  • Success stories for Brazil – EU projects
  • Think Tank for long term strategies for public policies in the areas of visual analytics, industrial policy, and digital TV;
  • Managing Identities: some relevant biometric issues;
  • Approaches and collaboration plans of the different international cooperation projects: from Research Brazil Ireland (RBI), Instituto de Estudos Brasil Europa – Institute for Studies Brazil Europe (IBE) and B.BICE+ and BIC.

Professor Ricardo Dahab of the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), has agreed to take on the role of steering the EWG of Brazil  and his first plans are to increase membership with eminent researchers from all over Brazil using the BIC priority topics as the starting point.

The BIC EWG launch meeting was being held in conjunction with the Research Brazil-Ireland (RBI) launch and showcase event being held on 21st Oct. 2013 at the University of São Paulo (USP). For more information on the RBI Launch, please check here.
