Waterford Institute of Technology, TSSG, Waterford,  Ireland

Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) is a university-level institution in the South-East of Ireland with over 10,000 students and 1,000 staff. There is a thriving research and postgraduate community in WIT. The Telecommunications Software & Systems Group (TSSG) at Waterford Institute of Technology is Ireland’s largest research centre in the information and communication technologies (ICT) domain.
WIT-TSSG’s unique research ethos is to build links between academic and industrial research through the creation of a balanced portfolio of activity in basic research, applied research and commercial activity. WIT-TSSG has a portfolio of 40 (active) and 80 (completed) funded R&D projects.

Through their involvement in many FP5, FP6 and FP7 (PERIMETER, Panlab II, PERSIST, 4WARD, INCO-Trust, THINK-TRUST, CoMiFin, Endorse) projects, WIT-TSSG have gained and built upon a wealth of experience in the areas of ICT trust and security (both as high-level strategic concept and security as lower level IP- based network issues, software and services, communications and infrastructure management, autonomics and testbed activities (focusing especially on building and deploying reusable hardware and software testbeds for software interoperability testing and repeatable experimental analysis of performance issues).

WIT-TSSG was involved in a number of recent Trust and Security focussed projects related to policy and research activities in Trustworthy ICT including Coordination Action projects INCO-TRUST (International cooperation in Trust and Security) building a long term strategy for International Cooperation in ICT Trust and Security between the EU and US, Japan, Korea, Australia and Canada; and Think-Trust (Think Tank for Converging Technical and Non-Technical Consumer Needs in ICT and Security), which facilitated RISEPTIS (Research and Innovation for SEcurity, Privacy and Trustworthiness in the Information Society), a high-level advisory body in ICT research on trust and security.

Within BIC, WIT-TSSG is the project coordinator and will be very active in building the community of researchers and programme management in the project in WP2 and WP4.

Technische Universitat Darmstadt, Darmstadt, Germany

TU Darmstadt is Germany’s premier Technical University and especially for Computer Science. Within the CS department, the DEEDS (Dependable Systems and SW) Group specifically targets research for the development, assessment and validation of systems, services and protocols as an infrastructural basis for trustworthy systems and services. The DEEDS group is internationally renowned for its unique composite coverage of dependability + security research and has garnered extensive ongoing support from the European Commission, US NSF, US DARPA, Airbus, Audi, Saab, Volvo, Daimler Chrysler, NASA, IBM, Boeing, Microsoft and Intel among others. The DEEDS group has led  the technical efforts for  FP6/FP7 IP’s and STREPS such as DECOS, ReSIST, GENESYS, INDEXYS, DBench, NextTTA, CoMiFIN, INSPIRE etc,  as well as extensive ongoing EC keynotes, project review and evaluation activities.

Based on (a) its established competences in composite dependable & secure computing, and (b) its joint EU-US profile, TUD/DEEDS will contribute to BIC in establishing the technical themes in specifying, designing and assessing trustworthy systems and services. The emphasis will cover protocols and middleware arenas in the emerging ultra-large scale next generation networks. Using its extensive US background, TUD/DEEDS will lead WP2′s effort to attract US NSF/DoD, US academia, Australian and Japanese links for the International Advisory Group of BIC. Professor Suri also has considerable experience and knowledge of the Trust and Security research going on within India.

Key personnel in BIC: Neeraj Suri, TU Darmstadt, Darmstadt, Germany

Neeraj Suri received his Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He currently holds the Chair Professorship in “Dependable Embedded Systems and Software” at TU Darmstadt, Germany. His earlier appointments include the Saab Endowed Chair Professorship, faculty at Boston University and multiple sabbaticals at Microsoft Research. His research interests focus on design, analysis and assessment of trustworthy (dependable & secure) distributed systems and software. The emphasis is on composite issues of dependability and security for web-scale SW/OS, verification/validation of distributed protocols and especially “trusted/secure systems by design”. Telecom  Paristech, ENST, Paris, France

GROUPE DES ECOLES DES TELECOMMUNICATIONS – Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications (ENST) is one of France’s leading graduate engineering schools in the field of Communication and Information Technologies. Its disciplines include all the sciences and techniques that fall within the term “Information and Communications“: Computer Science Networks, Communications, Electronics, Signal and Image Processing, as well as the study of economic and social aspects associated with modern technology. The school was founded more than a hundred years ago and is classed among the Grandes Ecoles d’Ingénieurs. Because of its high scientific standard and the extremely competitive admission procedures, ENST can be compared to the highest level engineering schools and universities that one would find abroad. The school produces about 250 state certified engineers each year. The school is publicly funded, with close links with a number of partner institutions: it is part of a federation of schools in telecommunications, called the GET (Groupement des Ecoles de Télécommunications) and a member of ParisTech, a multi-campus networks of nine graduate engineering schools, all located in the Paris area. Over the last few decades, ENST has gained a recognised position internationally in its technical domains. In addition to working on the development in the basic sciences, research at ENST also aims at broadening its field of study, moving in particular towards system integration, innovative services on the internet and in other media, and the analysis of users communication practices and their social impact.
